PREPAID DEBIT CARDS - Customers who make a prepaid reservation using a debit card need to be aware that the renting location may require a credit card in the renters name be used for leaving a deposit for the rental in order to rent the car. Customers who do not have a credit card may be denied rental.
DEBIT CARDS - Debit cards are permitted. No cash deposits are allowed. Economy Rent a Car accepts all major credit cards. No one other than the person named on the credit card may use that credit card for the deposit. The card holder must be present at the time of rental.
DRIVERS LICENSE - Renter must present a valid driver license at the time of rental. Foreign renters must present a valid driver license and a valid passport and based on the date of the entry stamp, will be allowed to rent a vehicle for up to 90 days, present at time of rental.
AGE - The minimum age of the Renter or any additional driver must be 18. Drivers age 18-21 may rent a vehicle for an additional charge of $10.00 per day with higher L.D.W deductible. No additional charges will apply if Renter is over the age of 21.
ADDITIONAL DRIVERS - Additional driver charge is $10.00 per day with a maximum of 3 additional drivers.
GAS - Vehicle must be returned with same amount of fuel as rented to avoid a refueling service charge. Free mileage are offer to the rental. Mileage restrictions may apply for local renters.
CANCELLATION - Customers who fail to cancel their reservation from the source it was booked, at least 48 hours prior of the pick up time, or do not show up for their reservation are subject to a $25 USD charge or one day rental charge, whichever is higher.
GEOGRAPHIC - Vehicles cannot be taken outside the country of Costa Rica. If you take the car out of Costa rica, then it will be considered negligence and a penalty charge will apply, plus time and expenses.
ONE-WAY - There may be an additional charge for dropping off the vehicle at a different office. The drop off charge varies depending at which office you are renting from and which office you are returning the vehicle into.
HOLDING RESERVED VEHICLES - Vehicles are held for two hours after reserved arrival time. When flight details are provided, we will hold vehicle for up to two hours after flight arrival. In the event of delays, you may call or e-mail us to advise of any changes in your pick up time. After the two hour window, you will be considered a no-show and we may or may not be able to honor your reservation, depending upon availability.
SHUTTLE - Economy Rent a Car is located at San Jose North Sabana Blvd right next to the NISSAN dealership office. Please call us on arrival for pick up.
ROAD SIDE ASSISTANCE: (ERA) Is an optional product, this program will have a cost of 3.99/day. With ERA, key services (lost or locked in car), jump starts and gas service (in case you run out of gas) will be provided at no cost. If customer prefers not to purchase ERA then will be responsible for any *service fees* in the event said customer requires any of the services listed above.
EQUIPMENT - Economy rent a car has the following products available upon request: Cellphone, Datacard, GPS, Baby Seat, Booster Seats, maps, and other accessories. Prices vary and all items are subject to availability upon arrival. It is the law that children and babies be seated in baby seats or booster seat you may be fined up to 360.000 colons by the Costa Rican police.
INSURANCE - L.W. - Liability Waiver * is a waiver of Economy Rent A Car's right to charge the Renter or Renters for damages to third parties during the rental and is required unless the Renters can provide written proof that their personal insurance will provide acceptable coverage in Costa Rica during the rental period. L.W. limits charges for damages, for injuries and third party properties to a 20 percent deductible and will also cover vehicle storage and administrative fees. L.W. charges are: Cars - $15.00 USD per day. SUVs - $ 20.00 USD per day. Vans - $25.00 USD per day. L.L.W - Limited Loss Waiver * - L.L.W. is an optional product that will reduce the Renters third party liability to zero and also reduces customers legal expenses to zero. L.L.W. charges - All Vehicles - $8.00 USD per day. --written proof-- If Renter wishes to decline L.W. Liability Waiver or L.D.W. Loss Damage Waiver and rely on the their own personal insurance, the Renter must provide written proof from their insurance company, specifically stating coverage is effective in the country of Costa Rica for the duration of the rental agreement for third part liability. A minimum security deposit of $5,000 USD will be required, if customer does not accept L.W. then L.L.W will automatically be required.

Optional Protection Products
OPTIONAL PROTECTION PRODUCTS - Emergency roadside assistance: all contracts will be automatically enrolled in the emergency roadside assistance (ERA) program at surcharge of only 3.99/day. Key services (lost or locked in car), jump starts and gas service (in case you run out of gas) will be provided at no cost. If customer prefers not to participate, they must decline participation upon rental and be responsible for any *service fees* in the event said customer requires any of the services listed above.
Collision Damage Waiver
L.D.W - Loss Damage Waiver * - is an optional product, it is a waiver of Economy Rent A Cars right to collect from the Renter for damages caused to the rental vehicle over the deductible amount. Deductible varies by vehicle. L.D.W. charges are: All Vehicles - $15.00 per day. L.D.W. *All Waivers will be void if the terms of the rental agreement are violated. All of the products or waivers listed will become null and void in the event of negligence while driving or while in possession of the rental vehicle such as driving the vehicle across beaches, rivers, etc, or driving under the influence of liquor, drugs or any other substance that could impair the drivers ability to operate the vehicle. Other negligent acts include, but are not limited to, leaving the keys in the ignition with the vehicle unattended, falling asleep while driving, ignoring traffic signals or police officers. --written proof-- If Renter wishes to decline L.W. Liability Waiver or L.D.W. Loss Damage Waiver and rely on the their own personal insurance, the Renter must provide written proof from their insurance company, specifically stating coverage is effective in the country of Costa Rica for the duration of the rental agreement for third part liability. A minimum security deposit of $2,500 USD will be required, if customer does not accept L.W. then L.L.W will automatically be required.

When you pick up your vehicle, you will be required to sign a rental agreement with the supplier of the vehicle. Your rental and use of the vehicle will be governed by the terms of the rental agreement and any other documentation or information provided to you by the supplier at the time you pick up your vehicle. The rental agreement is between you and the supplier and we will not be liable to you or to any third party in relation to the terms of the supplier's rental agreement or any other documentation provided to you by the supplier at the time of pick up.
While we will make reasonable efforts to ensure we are representing only reputable suppliers, we make no warranty about the fitness or suitability of any third party (supplier) product or service and will not accept responsibility for the quality or fitness of any vehicle. We welcome feedback from our customers on their experience with our suppliers. We may, at our discretion, provide you with reasonable assistance in resolving any dispute you may have with a supplier.
Our total liability to you in relation to your use of this website and the information contained on this website will not exceed the dollar amount of the deposit we have received from you in relation to your booking/rental. Refunds will not be made for bookings cancelled due to inclement weather. Again, we strongly recommend that you take out travel insurance. Your use of this website is governed by the laws of New Zealand and the jurisdiction of the New Zealand courts.
To make a booking you must complete our booking form which is easy to follow and secured with the latest encryption technology. Once we receive your form, we will, subject to availability, confirm your booking by emailing you a confirmation voucher and invoice.
If you are booking via phone, please make sure you have read the terms and conditions of the vehicle you wish to rent first. Our reservations consultant will ask you if you have read the terms and agree to them before proceeding. The onus is always on the renter to ensure they make themselves fully aware of the terms displayed on our website.
In booking on this website you acknowledge that we disclose your information to your selected Supplier in order to provide the requested rental services.
Vehicle capacity and fitness to drive
Under no circumstances are you permitted to carry more passengers than the vehicle you rent is legally registered to carry, and if you do your insurance may be invalidated. The number of seatbelts (and passengers) is indicated next to each vehicle on this website. Luggage capacity where shown is an indication only and we will not be responsible should you be unable to fit your entire luggage into a vehicle. It is your responsibility to choose a journey that is within your capabilities. A vehicle supplier can refuse to rent a vehicle to any person who is in their opinion unfit to drive or does not meet eligibility requirements. In such circumstances we will have no further liability to you.
In the event of cancellation, any deposit amounts paid at the time of booking are non-refundable.
If you are unsatisfied with our service, please contact us within 48 hours of placing your booking or request and we will work to resolve any issues and determine if compensation is due. In the event you have completed your rental and are unhappy with your vehicle, we are happy to assist you in seeking compensation from the operator of the vehicle.
