Vehicles rented with a full tank of fuel should be returned full to avoid a locally determined refuelling charge. Pre paying gas is available upon request. Vehicles must be returned with the same level of fuel given at the time of pick up.
Minimum age limit 21 and mawimum age limit 75. Driver must carry a valid and in force driver's license held for at least one year in order to rent and drive the vehicle.
Additional drivers policy
All additional authorized drivers are required to qualify to drive the vehicle. To qualify, THRIFTY requires all additional drivers, including spouses, to meet our minimum age requirements and have a valid drivers license. Extra driver US $4.99 per day. A total of 3 additional drivers may be allowed per contract for a surcharge of $9.99 per day.
Young drivers policy
Drivers between the ages of 18-21 are subject to an additional surcharge of US$20.00 per day and must comply with all driver's license requirements. Underage drivers can only drive the following car categories MDMR, EDMR, EDAR, IDMR, IDAR, CFMR, CFAR, IFMR, IFAR, FFMR, FFAR, and are not eligible for the total protection package.

SLI Supplemental Liability Insurance:
Supplemental liability Insurance (SLI): SLI is mandatory by law, and it covers third party claims. In case of damages or injuries to third party vehicles there is a minimum deductible of US$300 up to a maximum deductible of US$1500 according to the estimate of the damages caused to third party vehicle. The price of SLI is USD$12,99 for MDMR, IDMR, CDAR, IDAR, IFMR, IFAR, USD$14,99 for SFMR, SFAR, FFMR, FFAR and USD$16,99 for FPMR, XFAR, LFAR, FVMR, PVMR, PVAR. LDW (Loss Damage Waiver) is available with a USD$950 - USD$1500 deductible, and price is of USD$8,99 - USD$21,99. LDW covers collision and theft of the vehicle, but not partial theft. If LDW is declined, customers need to submit a written statement from credit card company confirming credit card cover for the rental at rental desk. If LDW is declined upon confirmation of credit card company protection, a USD$5000 security deposit is required at the time of the rental (If LDW is not purchased with SLI). COVERAGES PURCHASED ON THIRD PARTY WEBSITES OR SOURCES ARE NOT ACCEPTED IN COSTA RICA.
CDW Coverage Collision Damage Waiver:
The coverage applies for collision, damage and overturning. The financial responsibility reduces the Collision Damage Waiver deductible (excess) amount according to the car category. The renter and any additional drivers are absolutely liable for any loss or damage to the rental vehicle, even the loss or damage is caused by a third party or in the event the cause is unknown, whether because of theft, collision, vandalism or any other cause. In case of damages or injuries to third party vehicles there is a minimum deductible of US$300 up to a maximum deductible of US$1500 according to the estimate of the damages caused to the third party vehicle. The coverage’s daily cost varies depending on car category.
TPP Coverage: Total Protection Package
This coverage covers total and/or partial theft, damaged tires, rings, windshields and windows, towing Total Protection Package: and rescue services. It means that the financial responsibility reduces to zero in case of an accident, theft, vandalism, damaged tires, broken glasses. The client must strictly comply with all the provisions and undertakings of the rental agreement. US$17 per day.
ERA Service: Emergency Roadside Assistance
All contracts will be automatically enrolled in the Emergency Roadside Assistance Program (ERA) at a Emergency Roadside Assistance surcharge of only $1,99 per day. Key services (lost or locked in car), tire change, jump starts and gas Program: service in case you run out of gas will be provided at no cost. If customer prefers not to participate they must decline participation upon rental and be responsible for any Service fees in the event said customers requires any of the services listed above.
Vehicle License Fee:
$0,95 per day all car categories. Mandatory fee.
EXCLUDED RISKS IN ANY COVERAGE:
1. Damages caused from the poor condition of the public or private roads, or damages resulting from obstacles (whatever they are) that cause damages in the undercarriage of the vehicle, or damages caused from the negligent use of the vehicle.
2. Damages caused to the vehicle resulting from the interaction with rivers, beaches, estuaries, etc.
3. Damages caused in the undercarriage of the vehicle. Loss of cars documents or keys.
The renter must comply with the following conditions:
1. Driver cannot drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
2. Take care of the vehicle, be aware of the fuel level, lubricants and general condition of the car.
3. Comply with traffic laws and legal provisions.
4. No cross border policy allowed.
5. Carry current and active driver’s license and ID, vehicle’s documents and copy of the rental agreement.
6. Be liable to pay sanctions imposed due to traffic law violations.
7. No coverage applies when automobile is driven by an unauthorized driver by Thrifty Car Rental.
8. In case of an accident, the customer must wait for the traffic officer and the Insurance Company representative to issue the corresponding traffic tickets to be submitted at our rental offices. If the accident took place in a rural area, the lessee must report to the competent judicial or administrative authority, closest to the accident site, and submit a copy of the complaint to our rental office. It is mandatory to submit the corresponding statement made to the competent judicial authority indicated in the official ticket, for purposes of coverage implementation and effectiveness. Failure to submit any of these documents invalidates the implementation and effectiveness of the coverage. In case of accident, the customer must immediately notify our office and make a report regardless of the coverage taken in the rental agreement.
9. No coverage applies when the main driver or the authorized driver(s) by Thrifty Car Rental drives under the influence of alcohol, causing damages, injuries or death to him/herself or others.
NOTES: Coverages purchased on third party websites or insurance companies are not accepted by Thrifty Car Rental Costa Rica. When declining coverage, client must purchase at least the minimum mandatory coverage SLI (third party liability coverage). In order to decline LDW at time of pick up, customers need to submit a written statement from the credit card company confirming credit card’s cover for the rental. The written statement must be on the company's letter-head. If LDW is declined upon confirmation of credit card company protection, a USD$5000 security deposit is required at the time of rental.
Terms of booking on this website
The rates on this website are often heavily discounted. This is due to our negotiated rates and bulk buying power. On very rare occasions, a rate may be displayed incorrectly due to our, or a vehicle supplier's error. In such a case, if you book with us at a quoted rate that is incorrect, we will notify you of any price change and give you the option to proceed or cancel. We make every effort to keep information on our site up to date, but we cannot guarantee this website is free of errors or omissions and retain the right to update or change the information published at any time.
To the extent permitted by law we/the owners of this website will not be liable to you or to any third party (whether in contract, tort, or otherwise) for any direct, indirect or consequential loss or damage (including but not limited to any accident, injury, delay or loss of enjoyment) arising out of your reliance upon information contained on this website, including but not limited to your use (or inability to use) any products or services described or procured through this website.
When you pick up your vehicle, you will be required to sign a rental agreement with the supplier of the vehicle. Your rental and use of the vehicle will be governed by the terms of the rental agreement and any other documentation or information provided to you by the supplier at the time you pick up your vehicle. The rental agreement is between you and the supplier and we will not be liable to you or to any third party in relation to the terms of the supplier’s rental agreement or any other documentation provided to you by the supplier at the time of pick up.
While we will make reasonable efforts to ensure we are representing only reputable suppliers, we make no warranty about the fitness or suitability of any third party (supplier) product or service and will not accept responsibility for the quality or fitness of any vehicle. We welcome feedback from our customers on their experience with our suppliers. We may, at our discretion, provide you with reasonable assistance in resolving any dispute you may have with a supplier.
Our total liability to you in relation to your use of this website and the information contained on this website will not exceed the dollar amount of the deposit we have received from you in relation to your booking/rental. Refunds will not be made for bookings cancelled due to inclement weather. Again, we strongly recommend that you take out travel insurance. Your use of this website is governed by the laws of New Zealand and the jurisdiction of the New Zealand courts.
To make a booking you must complete our booking form which is easy to follow and secured with the latest encryption technology. Once we receive your form, we will, subject to availability, confirm your booking by emailing you a confirmation voucher and invoice. The deposit required to secure your vehicle (as shown on the secure booking page) will only be processed on your credit card when your booking is confirmed.
A booking is confirmed when you have been emailed a confirmation voucher and at this stage the deposit is processed on your card and becomes non-refundable and any cancellation fees stated in the supplier's terms apply. Upon receipt of your confirmation, please check your details carefully and notify us immediately if there are any incorrect details, as it may not be possible to make changes at a later date.
If you are booking via phone, please make sure you have read the terms and conditions of the vehicle you wish to rent first. Our reservations consultant will ask you if you have read the terms and agree to them before proceeding. The onus is always on the renter to ensure they make themselves fully aware of the terms displayed on our website.
In booking on this website you acknowledge that we disclose your information to your selected Supplier in order to provide the requested rental services.
Please note that some suppliers treat an amendment as a new booking and apply the rate current at the time the amendment is made to recalculate the entire booking amount (not just the days changed). If the rental period is increased, an additional deposit may be required. If the rental period is shortened which results in a reduction of the rental charges, the deposit amount will remain unchanged, and the difference between the original and revised deposit is forfeited (it cannot be used towards remaining rental charges). To request a change to a confirmed booking, please use the alterations request link on your confirmation. Any alterations are subject to availability and the approval of the supplier. In addition to the alteration policy of the supplier stated in their terms, the following charges will apply:

To change dates or times that result in a recalculation of rental rates, or to change vehicles or locations: 25.00
To add or remove extras to/from a confirmed booking: 10.00
The alteration fee will not be charged if your alteration request is not possible.
Vehicle Capacity and fitness to drive
Under no circumstances are you permitted to carry more passengers than the vehicle you rent is legally registered to carry, and if you do your insurance may be invalidated. The number of seatbelts (and passengers) is indicated next to each vehicle on this website. Luggage capacity where shown is an indication only and we will not be responsible should you be unable to fit your entire luggage into a vehicle. It is your responsibility to choose a journey that is within your capabilities. A vehicle supplier can refuse to rent a vehicle to any person who is in their opinion unfit to drive or does not meet eligibility requirements. In such circumstances we will have no further liability to you.
We are committed to providing a quality service and aim for complete customer satisfaction. In the event of cancellation, any refunds or penalties are detailed in the terms and conditions of your selected vehicle that you are asked to read and accept at time of booking. In the event you are unsatisfied with our service, please contact us within 48 hours of placing your booking or request and we will work to resolve any issues and determine if compensation is due. In the event you have completed your rental and are unhappy with your vehicle, we are happy to assist you in seeking compensation from the operator of the vehicle.
